PhD in biostatistics (Erasmus MC). My work centres on survival analysis and joint modelling of survival and longitudinal outcomes, with experience in oncology statistics and immunoassay calibration.

They say there are small lies, big lies and statistics. You may find statistics not a science, if you are a researcher from another background.

As a student of medicine, psychology or some other field you may think statistics is a nightmare.

As a mathematician I find statistics as beautiful as pure theoretical topology or geometry, just more useful for real-life problems.

As a biostatistician with experience in oncology I find it a powerful source of solutions in medicine.

As a researcher, after a PhD and post-doc, I still find it an undiscovered ground, a place of future developments, and (really) great fun.

Following my favourite science-fiction writer Asimov: “The most exciting phrase in science is not ‘Eureka!’ but ‘That’s funny …’.”

I took as a life mission to teach, apply and dig into biostatistics.

I always tell my students that “Everything is difficult until it becomes easy”, even and especially statistics.
